You will not be allowed to drive your own car off the impound lot. The moment you were arrested and your license was flagged in the state database, the lot lost the ability to release the vehicle to you as the driver. You have to show up with a second person, sober, fully licensed, and insured, who can drive it away. That's harder than it sounds when you've just been released from jail, need a ride to the lot, and may not have your phone, which was either seized as evidence or is locked inside the impounded car.

The inventory search
Before the car is handed to the tow company, deputies do a full inventory search of the cabin, glove box, console, and trunk, with no warrant needed. If that turns up an open container, drugs, an unregistered gun, or a large amount of unexplained cash, the misdemeanor DUI becomes a multi-count felony case. Fees
Non-consensual tows are capped by Georgia's Maximum Rate Tariff No. 5, updated in June 2024. No storage fee at all is allowed for the first 24 hours from the time the car was towed, which is the window to get it back before charges start compounding. Fees have to be all-inclusive; a lot cannot bill extra for dollies, a trailer, a lift, or a slim jim. It has to accept cash, a money order, or a certified or cashier's check, and if it can process cards it has to take one with no surcharge.

If a sober, licensed, insured passenger is in the car when you're stopped, the officer can let that person drive it away. That skips the tow, the inventory search, and every fee, but it's the officer's discretion.
