Liberty County Vehicle Impound Guide

There's no single impound lot to call in Liberty County. At 1,158 square miles, the county splits into a North End and South End for towing purposes, and whichever wrecker is next on the rotation list takes the car to its own privately run storage facility. Nobody chooses where the vehicle ends up, and there's no central website to check either. The only way to find it is calling the arresting agency's own dispatch line, Liberty County Sheriff's Office at 936-336-4500 or Cleveland PD at 281-592-2621, and giving them the plate or VIN so they can pull the rotation log.

Don't waste a day guessing

Because an intoxicated arrestee rarely absorbs what the officer tells them about where the car is going, families often spend a full day or two cold-calling private lots around the county before finding the right one. Skipping straight to the arresting agency's dispatch line instead of searching independently saves that whole cycle.

If the owner is still in jail

A storage facility that releases a car to the wrong person risks real penalties from the state, so if the registered owner is incarcerated, a family member can't just show up with cash. They need a notarized power of attorney or a state Affidavit of Right of Possession, which usually means getting a mobile notary to the jail in person. If the owner has already been transferred to an out-of-county facility because of the housing shutdown, that notarization turns into a multi-day errand involving travel between counties.

What it costs

The base rate for a standard light-duty arrest tow is capped at $225, plus a $10 county administrative fee. Storage runs in the neighborhood of $20 to $22 a day under the state cap. Every storage facility on the rotation is required to post a sign, at least two inches tall, with the phone number for the Sheriff's Office Fleet Manager, and a company that tries to charge above the county rate risks a complaint that can cost it its spot on the rotation list entirely.

Challenging the tow isn't usually worth it

There's a statutory right to request a hearing within 14 business days of the tow, filed with the Justice of the Peace precinct where the storage lot sits, for a $41 fee. In practice, a lawful DWI arrest almost always gives the tow enough legal justification to survive that hearing regardless of the outcome of the criminal case, so unless the arrest itself gets thrown out for lack of probable cause, the fees are going to stand.
