Benton County DUI Guide

419 drivers were arrested for DUI in Tennessee in 2024 and later tested completely negative for alcohol or drugs, the highest count of these "sober DUI" cases in eight years and nearly ten times the 45 recorded just one year earlier. The Tennessee Highway Patrol, which does the bulk of the enforcement work on corridors like Interstate 40 near Benton County, accounted for 190 of those zero-toxicology arrests statewide, and THP's West Tennessee district covering the Jackson region recorded 40 on its own. A negative blood test doesn't automatically clear a DUI charge here; officers can still rely on field sobriety performance and observed behavior, which is exactly why a new state law now forces the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to publicly report every case where a DUI defendant tests clean.

Benton County itself is small and rural, with a population under 12,000 and a Sheriff's Department running just 17 officers across the whole county. Between 2013 and 2025, local agencies logged 5,341 total arrests, three-quarters of them for low-level, non-violent offenses, with drug-related charges making up about 12% of that volume. The county seat, Camden, houses the General Sessions Court and the Sheriff's Office, but defendants quickly discover that almost nothing else related to a DUI case is handled locally: no county impound lot, no driver's license office capable of processing a reinstatement, and no state-certified DUI education provider inside the county line.

That gap defines the whole experience of a DUI arrest here more than anything else. Getting a car back means tracking down whichever private wrecker took it under the state's rotation system. Getting a license back means a 21-mile trip to Paris, in the next county over. And a fresh set of 2026 state law changes to Tennessee's implied-consent rules now puts real pressure on acting fast rather than waiting out the criminal case, since a civil license revocation for refusing the breath or blood test can now be decided before a defendant has even hired an attorney.
