Sandusky County Vehicle Impound Guide

Sandusky County doesn't run one central impound lot — vehicles get dispatched across a rotation of private towing companies including T-N-T Towing, Wilsons Towing and Recovery, Foster Towing, Lucky Towing, and Perkins Towing, based on whichever is available when the call comes in. Finding out which one has a specific car means calling the dispatch line with the plate number or the owner's name.

The Records Office, Not the Tow Lot, Is the Real Bottleneck

The towing companies themselves can be reached around the clock, but the vehicle can't actually be released without an authorization form from the Fremont Police Records Division — and that office only operates Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., closed on city holidays. An OVI arrest at 11 p.m. on a Friday means the car is genuinely unreachable until 6:30 a.m. Monday, during which storage fees accrue the entire time. Arriving right at opening Monday morning with the $45 administrative release fee, then heading straight to the private lot, is the fastest way to stop the bleeding.

License and Registration Both Have to Be in Order

Release requires a valid driver's license, current registration, and proof of insurance — and since an OVI arrest typically triggers an immediate license suspension, the owner can't legally drive the car away even with everything else in hand. A second, fully licensed and insured driver has to come along specifically to take the wheel. If the registration happens to be expired on top of that, release gets flatly denied until a trip to the BMV fixes it — there's no exception for "I'll register it later."

Disputing the Tow

An owner who believes a tow was unjustified can request a formal tow hearing, but Fremont authorities are upfront that a hearing "might not occur the same day when you leave your message." Because storage fees keep accruing in the meantime, the practical move is paying everything upfront to get the car back, with reimbursement only if the hearing officer later rules in the owner's favor. Towing fees themselves are capped at "reasonable cost" under Ohio Administrative Code 4901:2-24-03 — a vague standard, but one that gives real leverage against a rotation lot that tries to price-gouge a vulnerable defendant, since staying on the county's approved rotation list requires the company to take fee complaints seriously.
