A misspelled name on the citation won't get a DUI case dismissed in Candler County. Prosecutors here amend paperwork errors rather than toss them, and the State Court's fine schedule is known regionally as one of the steepest in southeast Georgia. That combination catches a lot of first-time defendants off guard.

The volume driving this comes from Interstate 16, which cuts through the county connecting Macon to Savannah. With barely 11,000 residents, Candler County still processes an estimated 640 alcohol-related stops a year, most of them involving drivers who have never set foot in Metter before their arrest. The Candler County Sheriff's Office, Metter Police, and Georgia State Patrol's Post 45 out of Statesboro all work the corridor, and enforcement spikes hard around holiday weekends under statewide campaigns like "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over."

Getting the car back moves fast, or it gets expensive fast. Georgia's DPS Maximum Rate Tariff No. 5 caps the tow at $228 and gives the first 24 hours of storage free, but every day after that adds up to $33, and a vehicle left past 72 hours picks up a $65 notification fee on top. The tariff also bars storage charges for any day the yard is closed and the owner physically couldn't retrieve the car — a rule tow operators don't always mention, and one worth checking against an itemized receipt before paying.

Release from the Candler County Jail depends less on paperwork than on blood alcohol.
