How Bail Bonds Work
Option 1: Cash Bond (Pay Full Amount)
How it works: Pay the full bail amount to the court
Pros: Get full amount back after case concludes (minus court fees)
Cons: Requires full amount upfront
Option 2: Bail Bondsman (Most Common)
How it works: Pay 10-15% fee to bondsman, they post full bail
Cost: Typically 10% of bail amount (non-refundable)
Pros: Only need 10% upfront instead of full amount
Cons: Fee is non-refundable, may require collateral, co-signer assumes liability
Co-Signer Liability Warning
Important for Co-Signers:
- You are 100% liable if defendant does not appear in court
- You must pay the full bail amount if defendant skips
- Bondsman can seize collateral (house, car, etc.)

A DUI arrest in Phillips County means no bond hearing until a judge sees you in person or by video, and that can take until Sunday morning. Chief Judge Order 2024-1 rescinded the fixed bond schedule for every DUI, DUI per se, and underage-drinking arrest across the 13th Judicial District. The replacement rule is blunt: anyone arrested on those charges is held without bond until an individualized hearing. A bondsman can't get you out early. Nobody can.
Weekend timing makes it worse. Arrested Friday night, the earliest hearing is Sunday at 7:00 a.m., held by video from the Logan County Jail in Sterling. Miss that slot and the backup docket runs Monday at 7:00 a.m. instead. That's a detention window of roughly 36 hours at minimum, sometimes closer to 60, for something that in many Colorado counties would mean posting a few hundred dollars and walking out the same night.
Lesser traffic charges still use the old fixed schedule. A Class 1 traffic offense runs $2,000 cash or surety. Class 2 is $100 personal recognizance. An unclassified misdemeanor is $300 PR. None of that applies once alcohol enters the charge, and even a minor offense loses its bond eligibility if it involves an injury accident or a refusal to sign the penalty assessment.
The Phillips County Jail at 221 S. Interocean Avenue in Holyoke only processes new arrestees. It doesn't house anyone overnight, and it offers no visitation. Right after booking there's a brief window where someone facing a non-DUI charge can still post cash on the spot. DUI arrests skip that window entirely; you're transferred roughly 20 to 25 miles west to the Logan County Jail in Sterling to wait out the hearing instead.
Once bond is finally set, it's usually posted in Sterling, not Holyoke, so whoever's fronting the money has to make that drive too, unless they use a licensed bail bondsman to handle it remotely.
Finding someone who's been arrested means checking the Logan County Inmate Roster, since Phillips County doesn't run its own booking database. Once bond issues are settled, visitation follows Logan County's calendar: video visits on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays only. Phone calls run through Logan County's own vendor account system, separate from anything tied to Phillips County.
